Walter Alcock (1861-1947)

At the age of 15 Alcock won a scholarship to the National Training School for Music, where he studied composition with Arthur Sullivan and the organ with John Stainer. This institution was a precursor to the Royal College of Music. Such was his rise to fame by 1893 he was appointed Organ Professor at the RCM.

Alcock had the unique distinction of playing the organ at Westminster Abbey at the coronations of three kings: Edward VII (1902), George V (1911) and George VI (1937).  He was knighted in 1933 for services to music.

I have arranged no.7 from his 12 Short Introductory Voluntaries (1925) for string orchestra. It's a short but moving piece. (I've taken the liberty of including a short repeat from the 1st half - I think it works)

SAMPLE: Andante (no.7) from 12 Short Voluntaries.
